Khotso Passive House

Brief

Khotso Passive House was designed for a young and outdoorsy family with international roots. It is first and foremost a healthy and comfortable home in which to raise their twin boys, and one which reflects their modern and simple style.

‘Khotso’ is the Sesotho word for ‘calm’ and ‘peace’. The name honours their aspirations for the home in the language of Lethoso, a small African country and a place of importance in the owner’s childhood and shared travels.

The homeowners and project team understand that Passive House is a smarter way to build. The owners were motivated to pursue the aggressively high-performance standard of Passive House to advocate by doing. They wanted to play a role in pushing sustainable market transformation in Vancouver’s construction industry. Khotso exemplifies the design principles of a super-high-efficiency, and exceedingly comfortable, passive home. The entirety of the 2800 SF single family home with secondary suite is within the Passive House envelope, including the basement.
